AHOY, MATEYS! If you’re scared of pirates, witches, and goblins, read no further! But if you’re a brave soul, come aboard for the ride of your life! It’s an adventure on the high seas for Alamin’s wizarding apprentices, Kay and Jerra, but it’s definitely not a pleasure cruise. They are in a race against time to stop the witch, Krellia, from releasing an ancient evil from its thousand-year-old prison. Only the Ring of Carnac holds the key to stopping Krellia and her pirate and goblin minions. Unfortunately, the ring has been missing for hundreds of years, and the one person who may hold the clue to the ring’s whereabouts an odd, reclusive wizard who lives on an island far to the south. Alamin promises to protect his young apprentices on their journey, but, when Kay and Jerra become prisoners aboard a pirate ship where magic doesn’t work, their adventure seems like it will end before it has hardly begun!

The Ring of Carnac The Tales of Gaspar Volume 2 Brian G Michaud 9781502986207 Books Reviews

I'll admit that fantasy with goblins and wizards is not my usual choice for reading material, but since I had read the previous book in this series (The Road to Nyn), I decided to give this one a chance. I would say that this book is geared toward the middle-grade reader, but it is still entertaining for adults as well. In fact, any fantasy-lover will enjoy the world of Gaspar. I listened to the Audible audio edition narrated by Fred Wolinsky. Though Wolinsky is not my favorite narrator (due to a strange cadence in his "narrator" voice), he is still very gifted at created unique voices for each of his characters. I'm rather impressed by the range of voices he can do. Overall, a fun and entertaining read for all-ages-fantasy-genre-lovers.
Another whimsical and fun adventure about wizards, goblins, swords, and more. I was given a copy of the Ring of Carnac in exchange for my honest opinion. Here is by honest (and very happy) opinion.

Book one was fantastic. It created this world of magic and adventure every little kid wishses they could live in. I know I often played games with my sisters pretending to be on similar adventures. Book two did not disappoint. I absolutely loved it! I read it twice because there are so many little details and extra hat tips from book one you can easily miss if you don't remember it. I'm an avid adventure book lover and even as an adult thoroughly enjoy The Tales of Gaspar. There is just enough to keep any adventure lovers of any age intrigued, laughing, and smiling the entire time. The fit is on yet again! We follow Kay and Jerra on another adventure to win the war against the Goblins. With the help of many other, can they defeat the Goblins once and for all?

Brian's writing style is fun, light, entertaining, and funny. I found myself giggling out loud and having to explain why to those around me. They often would laugh with me after.

I highly recommend this book if you enjoyed the first and/or the series if you want a fun, whimsical adventure.
Despite not having read the first book in this series, I found it fairly easy to adjust to the world of Gaspar. I liked most of the characters -- Alamin the wizard, Felix the snarky sprite, and Jerra the strong-willed apprentice were among my favorites. Bibo annoyed me a little at the start, but I warmed up to him as the book went on.

The basic concept is the age-old quest to save the land from a dark power. There were a few twists and turns along the way, but nothing huge. What I really liked about the story was the pleasing combination of magic and swashbuckling, reminiscent of Stardust (which just so happens to be one of my favorite movies). The most intriguing part for me was the epilogue, which hints that the world might be bigger than Kay and his friends originally thought.

Overall, The Ring of Carnac is a decent fantasy read, which I think would be appreciated by readers aged 8 and up.

Disclaimer I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Although The Ring of Carnac is book 2 in the Tales of Gaspar series I found I was able to follow the story quite well, not having read book 1, The Road of Nyn. It is unfortunate that the fantasy adventure tale contained between the covers is one based around the search for a ring, as one of the two best fantasy stories ever, in the opinion of many, including myself, is that written of course by J.R.R. Tolkein. Comparisons between them as one reads are difficult to avoid. However, Michaud’s book is aimed at a younger group of readers, I would say around the age of 9 to 11, when, hopefully, they would be unlikely to have read either The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings.

Adventure and danger, fellowship among the travellers, a fast moving plot and twists and turns along the way are all ingredients for success in the recipe for a children’s story and The Ring of Carnac has them all. Humorous dialogue and intrigue are also to be found here which will capture the attention of any child and persuade them to keep turning the pages. When you include wizards, goblins and sword fights as well - what is not to like? This is a well written book from the beginning to the end of the journey taken by Kay and Jerra, the two main characters, although my favourite character was the mischievous Felix. Recommended to all lovers of fantasy adventure stories.

I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
I liked the sequel even more than the first! Kay, Alamon, and the gang are back and this time they tangle with pirates, spies, wonkey wizards, and more evil doers. This book is great for kids just starting to read chapter books. Michaud presents a story that is accessible to the youngest readers but still approaches tough topics like betrayal and grief. I think it is essential to all ages fiction that we not underestimate the capability of children to begin pondering mature themes in the safety of such a work of fantasy. The book isn’t just for kids, as no all ages fantasy truly is. Are you an adult? Pick up a copy to read to your little buddy. He could use a break from tv.

I listened to this story on audible any time me and my nine year old son took a ride. It started with a three hour drive to Lake George to enjoy the last week of summer vacation. As Kay and his adventurers traversed their world questing for a ring, the fam and I journeyed to school, ran weekend errands, and birthday partied. Sometimes my wife rode along. She pretends like she doesn’t care, but I caught her asking for plot fill-ins more than once on this book! My toddler even joined in with some Teelock imitations.

I was given a free audible code at my request and have voluntarily left a review. Any review. That fact that it’s a good one is because the book is good. Which has nothing to do with how awesome I am. You’ll have to find that out for yourself at LARC-SciFi(dot)com. You can read my review of Michaud’s first novel, the Road to Nyn there.
Very creative writing. My favorite character is Felix. Looking forward to next book. All characters make the book magical. Thank you for a GREAT story.
