I found the story to be entertaining if not a bit gruesome, probably not for very young children though, it may give them nightmares of having their feet chopped off, however the story definitely delivers warnings against vanity and is actually an engaging little story, worthy of the few minutes it takes to read.Product details

What a depressing story!! Not to be read to children, especially before bed. Also, either the translation is very poor, or Andersen couldn't write.
I love all of Hans Christian Andersen stories, but this one is my favorite. Reading this book was a beautiful experience that allowed my mind to drift away from the madness of my demanding lifestyle.
Wow, this was a creepy, depressing, overly religious story. I can see why it was the basis for the amazing (but also creepy and depressing) film. The two stories were very different, or course (meaning the film and the story) but it was based on the same idea...being forced to do something you love until you will do anything just to stop doing it. Worth a read, but kind of scary that this was intended for kids.
