Flourishing people are strong and weak. Two common temptations lure us away from abundant living withdrawing into safety and grasping for power. True flourishing, says Andy Crouch, travels down an unexpected path - being both strong and weak. We see this unlikely mixture in the best leaders - people who use their authority for the benefit of others while also showing extraordinary willingness to face and embrace suffering. We see it in Jesus, who wielded tremendous power yet also exposed himself to hunger, ridicule, torture, and death. Rather than being opposites, strength and weakness are actually meant to be combined in every human life and community. Only when they come together do we find the flourishing for which we were made.

With the characteristic insight, memorable stories, and hopeful realism he is known for, Andy Crouch shows us how to walk this path so that the image of God can shine through us. Not just for our own good but for the sake of others. If you want to become the kind of person whose influence leads to healthy communities, someone with the strength to be compassionate and generous, this is the book for you. Regardless of your stage or role in life, whether or not you have a position of leadership, here is a way of love and risk so that we all, even the most vulnerable, can flourish.

Strong and Weak Embracing a Life of Love Risk and True Flourishing (Audible Audio Edition) Andy Crouch P J Ochlan christianaudiocom Books

I've long wrestled with the specific topic of how to think about power and privilege as a (relatively speaking) wealthy American Christian. In the spirit of full transparency, I was a part of the campus community that Andy references in the book that - for better and for worse - promoted a strong philosophy of "downward mobility" as the antidote to an all-too-easy hollowed out Christianity consumed with the pursuit of success and security. While there was a great deal of truth and goodness in that approach, it was not flexible or broad enough to handle the realities of our complex world. Andy's book/framework nails the question (of how to think through being a person of relative power and privilege while following a God who laid down his life in sacrifice for others) with insight, humor and vulnerability. It's the framework I wish I had had 20 years ago, but one I think will serve me well for at least the next 20.

Strong and Weak Embracing a Life of Love Risk and True Flourishing (Audible Audio Edition) Andy Crouch P J Ochlan christianaudiocom Books Reviews

I absolutely loved this book. It is full of fresh insights that come from clear thinking and honest observation. The author caused me to think about leadership in a different way and I keep reflecting on situations using the model he gives as a way to interpret them.

This isn't a book of platitudes and clichés. It's not a how to get better as a leader book. (I love those too!) This isn't a book that's taken a picture of leadership and "baptized "it to make it Religious. This is a truly Christian way to look at leadership. It may be the most Christian book I have read on being a leader.
This book had a profound impact on me as a Pastor. I have long used John Ortberg's language of "floundering" or "flourishing" to describe the human existence and God's intentions for humanity. Andy Crouch blows that language and understanding wide open! In a thoughtful way he helps lead to insights that human flourishing (counter to our autonomous driven culture) is a communal endeavor. What good is my personal flourishing if those around me are still floundering? The call of the Gospel is for us to see human flourishing as a group effort and Crouch helps us to think more deeply about what that means; and what that may look like for those striving to live out the call of the Gospel.
I'd give this book six or seven stars if I could. It is profound and formative, a rare book that gives a livable paradigm. Crouch is equal parts teacher and inspirer with a lot of craftsman thrown in to make the work beautiful. It is a book for leaders, parents, students, spouses, and more. But it is a not leadership, parenting, calling, or marriage book. It's a paradigm for living a truly meaningful life in each of those contexts - in all contexts. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
I finished reading this book about ten minutes ago and I am already making a list of people I am going to recommend go buy it and read it.

At the heart of this book is an exploration of the tension of the need for both authority (the ability to act meaningfully) and vulnerability (an exposure to true risk and loss) for an experience of flourishing in our lives. I found this paradigm thought provoking and helpful as I considered my own struggle for spiritual growth and increasing vibrancy in my spiritual life. It was also insightful for understanding some of the social and racial tension we walk in daily.

I picked up this book because I loved Crouch’s book Culture Making. This book is less academic and more personal, but no less insightful. This is not a Christian self-help book. It is something much better. It is a fresh and vibrant look at the the power of the gospel - the good news that we can flourish, and help others flourish, by growing in our experience authority and vulnerability.

With books I like, I will go back and hand copy all the portions I highlighted into my notebook for further reflection. I only do this with book worthy of the extra reflection - and this one is well worth it.

I highly recommend it.
This was one of my favorite books that I read in 2017 in inspiration/self-help read genre. Andy Crouch's take on what it means to live as people who flourish, rings true. I'm seeing examples of authority, withdrawal, flourishing, and suffering/vulnerability all around and I always think about what Andy taught in this book. When I see people flourishing despite their vulnerability, I know they have found something beautiful. This is a quick read that will challenge you to think about how God has made you to live in this world. Yes, the world and the people in the world are broken, but there is hope. Strong and Weak is a great companion book for the journey toward living a life of true flourishing.
There is something about Andy Crouch's writing style that arrests me like few others. Maybe it's his ability to be deep without being dry or connecting reality with spirituality without coming off trite. I don't know, but I find the things I read in his books stick with me the longest. I constantly find myself doing two things as I read this book saying "wow" out loud a lot and realizing how succinctly he has summarized our reality with 4 words! The 2x2 chart he uses in this book to help us understand human flourishing fits insanely well with reality. I'm thankful to God he has given me a gift in a book that can actually impact the way I live. This book will be very helpful as a biblical counseling paradigm as well. I found this book highlighting something in my own life in which I regularly withdraw from relationships requiring vulnerability. Coming from a home where my parents went on to multiple divorces I guess I learned that lack of personal authority (in my parents relationships) was only solved by retreating from vulnerability in other relationships so I wouldn't be hurt like that again. This book helped me see that I will not flourish like this and I just didn't have a paradigm to interpret it by. All my schooling in biblical counseling didn't provide as helpful of a framework as this book for dealing with large swaths of reality and humanity. I cannot recommend this book enough.
