Werwolves Elliott O'Donnell 9781491079997 Books

Meant to seem scholarly, written in a pedantic style, this is meant to be a serious discussion of the werewolf phenomenon across Europe. It is a framework upon which lurid tales of disembowelling might be laid. I first read this as a teenager, my public library had a copy that I checked out dozens of times, but I remember it being better ... my literary tastes must not have been as refined.

Werwolves, Elliott O'Donnell

The `Introduction' says the legends of a werwolf are found in European countries and certain parts of Asia and Africa (`wer' means man). Werwolves can overtake horse-drawn vehicles, but there are no records of them ever catching motor-driven vehicles. Werwolves have an uncontrollable urge to kill. Only their death stops their killing. Belief in werwolves was very popular in 16th century France. Delusion or hysteria (Chapter 1)? Was this similar to witchcraft in England? Torture extracted these confessions. There are quotes from the Bible about supernatural events; also quotes from authorities from classic times. Other areas have slightly different versions such as wer-leopards (Chapter 2). Chapter 3 tells of a werwolf attack in Estonia.

How to become a werwolf? Read Chapter 4 to learn how to recognize a werwolf "long, straight, slanting eyebrows which meet in an angle over the nose". Can a werwolf be cured by an exorcism? O'Donnell is skeptical (Chapter 5). There is the story of a woman who married a werwolf. When exorcism didn't work the werwolves were shot dead. There were wolves in Great Britain and Scotland in olden times, and werwolves too (Chapter 6). Werwolves flourished in France since the 6th century (Chapter 7). Sometimes this was caused by curses and spells by witches and wizards. These virtuous victims protected humans. Trials of werwolves was common in France from the Middle Ages to the 17th century (Chapter 8). There are stories of ghouls, who like to eat brains or steal the bodies of the living. Germany was rich in stories about the supernatural (Chapter9). Werwolf stories are mostly found near the Harz mountains. Drinking from a brook can create a werwolf (Chapter 10).

Chapter 11 tells about werwolves in Austria-Hungary and the Balkans. There are reports of a strange flower that turns a person into a werwolf. Other flowers attract werwolves (marigold, azaleas, and lillies-of-the-valley). Chapter 12 tells about the werwolves of Spain, which are less common than in other parts of Europe. [How did they know what Paul Nicholas said?] Chapter 13 tells about the werwolf in Belgium and the Netherlands. There is a formula for holy water to sprinkle on werwolves during an exorcism in Roman Catholic countries. The mountain ash tree keeps werwolves away. The werwolves of Denmark are described in Chapter 14. They were once common there but now are only found in remote districts.

Werwolves were once very common in Norway and Sweden (Chapter 15). There is a formula for creating a werwolf under a full moon. The werwolves in Iceland, Lapland, and Finland are described in Chapter 16. Some are wer-bears as well. In Lapland werwolves were tied and thrown into lakes to drown. In Finland werwolves have poisonous claws. The werwolf is very prevalent in Russia and Siberia due to dense forests and vast tracts of uncultivated land (Chapter 17). Werwolves favor the Caucasus and Ural mountains. Exorcisms are used to cure werwolves.

These stories are educational. Really! I wonder why werwolves were never found in the dense forests of North America? Was it due to Immigration Laws that banned werwolves, vampires, and other horrors? Or the protection of wide oceans that separated the New World from the Old World? The Great Minds in the Great Universities of North America have never been able to answer this question in peer-reviewed publications. -)
This is the best werwolf book in my personal opinion.
Boring
JUST RECEIVED IT TODAY AND CAN'T WAIT TO READ IT.
Curious, quaint, eerie, fascinating and, in parts, disturbing. One chapter tells how to become a werewolf. A young man in France confessed to being a one. Today, he would be diagnosed as needing psychiatric treatment. In his time, he was believed and punished.
There are some good references to some hard to reach folklore, which is best taken with a grain of salt because there is no objectivity within this writing. Things are drawn to correlate that should not, and some myths are outright made up and without sourcing at all. Despite this, those larger than life sections still make for a fascinating read, if not its own completely unique set of myths you won't find elsewhere. My recommendation is to download (much of his work is under public domain) and then buy a hard copy if your liked it that much. As a collector of books on the folklore of shapeshifting, this was an essential add to my collection.
